Spring Updates
New Paintintgs & Upcoming Projects
Welcome new subscribers! I’m so grateful for your interest and support, and feel lucky to share my work and thoughts with you. Working each day alone in a studio can leave you wondering about your life choices, especially in the dark winter. So knowing that I have a way to reach people who enjoy my work is gratifying, and makes my heart warmer. Thank you.
A few updates:
During the last blizzard here in NYC I walked home through the magnificent snow, taking my time to carefully place each heavily booted foot in new, fresh-from-the heavens, untouched snow- something rare and miraculous in an urban setting. It felt gratifying to see the environment transformed. Waking up and looking out the windows to see that not only has it snowed all night, but also it is still snowing took me back to being a child in upstate New York, discovering an early morning blanket of white redemption, the kind that guarantees the local AM radio station will be announcing your school district in the long list of closures for the day.
That night at the top of the Clumber Corner (most people don’t know that is the name for the little mini park at the top of Washington St. and Adams/Prospect Streets). Three intrepid snowplows-guardians of asphalt turned the corner down Washington Street just as I was taking photos of the Brooklyn Bridge. I thought you might enjoy a little rewind to that sublime night, now that hopefully Spring is here.
I’ve been pretty busy in the studio all winter, always working to improve my painting skills by working from life. Here are a few recent works:
Below are two new paintings I just added to Blue Ribbon Restaurant at 97 Sullivan St. in NYC. All these works are available on my website. I’m working on ideas for a few larger new pieces for the Blue Ribbon wall too, which I’ll start at the end of April. (Right now I’m getting ready for an open Studio April 18-19. See info below).

(Blue Ribbon got a really nice review in the Wall Street Journal recently, and they mentioned my artwork! You can read it here: https://www.ft.com/content/113eb26d-e4ba-497c-b667-155860b8776e )
Something I’m working on now:
Here is a piece I’m working on now, a study for a larger painting. I love indicating the figures lightly, and will see if I can carry that spontaneous feel to a larger work.
Upcoming is the annual Dumbo Open Studios event on April 18th-19th- I hope some of you can make it over to see my exhibition. I’ll have a preview as it gets closer. Here’s the link to the official event so you have an overview. It should be a great year- there’s lots of studios open. My studio is at 55 Washington Street, 3rd. floor, #317. Swing by and say hi!
Something about me:
I applied for a few residency opportunities, so we’ll see how that goes. It can be quite a task to write statements and project descriptions. I know that people are interested to know what the artist thinks, what their motivation is, and what the work is about. I try to be genuine with what I’m saying about my work, but sometimes I don’t have everything worked out in a way that makes sense. I wonder, do people care to read these explanations and statements? In any case for me, painting and writing are separate and the coming up with themes and intentions comes after the fact. Suffice it to say, my statements are not heavy on verbiage!
A few donations:
Recently I donated these two pieces- the claw to Visual Aids, a benefit for Aids/HIV research and support, and the Brooklyn Bridge to Vinegar Hill Pantry (an amazing local food resource created by my friend Jenn Macksoud). Happy to say both pieces sold, and I’m glad for the chance to support a good cause.
Hope everyone is doing well-more soon.
Warmly Jen
